Travelling on an Intercity 225

Intercity 225s are electric trains. All of them have been through major refurbishment programmes since they were first introduced in the UK about 25 years ago. Each train has nine air-conditioned, open-plan carriages of which three are designated as First Class. The name Intercity 225 comes from the train’s nominal top speed of 225 km per hour. In practice, Intercity 225 trains never run on the UK network at more than 200 km/h.

The Intercity 225 is Virgin East Coast’s principal train used on fast services from London to Leeds, York and Edinburgh – although you’ll find Intercity 125 trains (also called HSTs) on these routes too. Each Intercity 225 train has over 500 seats. You can take your bike on the train, but this service needs to be pre-booked.

Coach B in Standard and Coach K in First Class are quiet coaches. There are good luggage facilities on board an Intercity 225, particularly in First Class. Seat reservation is advisable in both First and Standard Class, though not required. Download Virgin East Coast’s Beam app to gain access to on-board entertainment on demand (games, TV and blockbuster movies).
