Travelling on the Glacier Express train
The scenic Glacier Express is a year-round, narrow-gauge Swiss train run in cooperation between Rhaetian Railway and the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn. Air-conditioned, modern and spacious observation cars with large panoramic windows make the Glacier Express a wonderful journey through some of Switzerland’s finest mountain scenery. There are three services daily in summer and one in winter running the full route from Zermatt to St Moritz. This really is a train for all seasons. But do remember that it’s aimed fair and square at the international tourist market. You’ll not find yourself rubbing shoulders with the locals.
The iconic red-and-white Glacier Express takes about eight hours for the full run from Zermatt to St Moritz. You’ll pass through wonderful Alpine landscape from the foot of the Matterhorn in the Valais region of Switzerland through Graubünden to the Engadine. Highlights include the ascent to the route’s highest point, the Oberalp pass, and the descent down into the Rhine gorge via Disentis. If you don’t like the idea of a dedicated tourist train, regular local services run on exactly the same route, but you will need to change trains along the way.
The Glacier Express offers two classes of accommodation. A seat reservation is obligatory and not included in the price of your ticket. Space and facilities for wheelchair users are available in First Class (but at Standard Class prices). If you do not want to use the on-board catering service, you can always bring your own food and drink. Note that dogs do not travel for free.
Seating and sleeping on Glacier Express
Standard Class seating on the Glacier Express is in groups of four comfortable seats around a table. Every seat offers panoramic views. Luggage may be stored in the space between each back-to-back pair of seats and at the end of each carriage. A commentary about principal sites along the route is available in six languages through the audio system at your seat.
Food and drink on Glacier Express
The catering staff will come through the train with a trolley service offering snacks, sweets and drinks.
