Travelling on an Avant train

Avant trains provide extremely comfortable high-speed services on short and medium-distance routes in Spain, with limited stops en route. Avant trains are generally faster and markedly more comfortable than the other medium-distance brand (called Media Distancia or MD) and are usually just four coaches long.

Avant is reliable, fast and has a very contemporary feel. These trains feature on a dozen high-speed routes across Spain, very few more than two hours long. Madrid, Barcelona and Cordoba are the main hubs, but you’ll also find Avant trains serving principal cities in Galicia.

All Avant services require advance reservation – which makes sense as Avant trains can be quite full, especially on routes like Toledo to Madrid which double as commuter services. The price of the reservation is included in the fare. Some of the Avant trains which are branded as AV City services carry a café or buffet car that offers hot and cold drinks, beer and wine during your journey.

Seating and sleeping on Avant

Feature

Standard Class

Standard Class (called Turista) broadly equates to Second Class elsewhere in Europe, but Standard Class seating on Avant trains is a cut above Second Class norms. Expect air-conditioned comfort, bright and airy decor with most seats arranged in airline-style pairs rather than around tables. It is a high-quality service.

Food and drink on Avant

Feature

Vending machine

Most Avant services have vending machines selling hot and cold drinks, confectionary and light snacks. Don’t expect haute cuisine, but you’ll find it sufficient to stave off pangs of hunger for the short Avant journey.

Child and youth passengers

The definition of "Child" and "Youth" varies by country and rail operator. This is why we ask for the age of young passengers.

Sometimes children below a certain age can travel without a seat for free. If you want to guarantee a seat for child passengers, enter '6' as the age of the child.
