Travelling on a Talgo train
‘Talgo’ is both the brand name of a train type operated by Renfe as well as the name of a leading Spanish engineering company. The latter manufactures carriages not only for Renfe’s Talgo brand, but also for other Spanish trains as high-speed AVE and Alvia services as well as for train operators worldwide. Here, we describe only those train services that Renfe calls Talgo. And that's also the name we show on Loco2 when you book your ticket for journeys on which these Talgos operate.
Talgo-branded trains operated by Renfe afford comfortable travel on a dwindling number of Spanish routes. With their articulated carriages, they are used on a limited number of rail routes that start, end or pass through Valencia. This includes Talgo-branded services from Valencia to Alicante, Barcelona, Lorca, Sevilla and Murcia. A key long-distance Talgo train is the Torre del Oro which runs daily from Barcelona to Seville via the classic Despeñaperros Pass route. Talgo trains are also used for twice-daily services from Madrid to Almeria. The cross-border Talgo services between Spain and major French cities have all now been replaced by sleek new AVEs or French TGV trains.
Talgo trains are extremely comfortable and have three classes of seated accommodation. Luggage can be stored in vertical luggage racks at the end of each carriage or in overhead racks above your seat. A seat reservation is obligatory and included in the price of your ticket.
Seating and sleeping on Talgo
Standard Class (called Turista) on Talgo is comfortably spacious with large windows and plenty of luggage space. Four seats per row is the norm, with a pair on either side of the central aisle. Some seats are in groups of four around a table.

Café / Buffet
Most Talgo trains carry a cafeteria or buffet car open to all passengers that offers hot and cold drinks, beer and wine during your journey. At lunch and dinner time hot meals can be ordered. Don’t expect fine dining; you’ll either take your snack back to your seat or enjoy it while standing at one of the bar tables in the buffet car.
