Travelling on an Altaria train

Air-conditioned, spacious Altaria trains operated by Renfe provide long-distance rail services in Spain. Altaria trains are articulated and have therefore shorter carriages than usual. They are very flexible and can run on both high-speed and traditional lines.

Altaria trains nowadays frequent far fewer routes than just a few years ago. But they still serve a number of routes running south from Madrid to reach cities well beyond Spain’s high-speed network such as Cartagena, Murcia, Ronda and Algeciras.

Altaria trains offer two classes of seated accommodation: First Class and Standard Class. Luggage can be stored both overhead and in racks at the end of each carriage. As with all Spanish long-distance train services, a seat reservation is obligatory. Tickets and reservations will often be checked on the platform before boarding the train.

Seating and sleeping on Altaria

Standard Class

In Standard Class (called Turista), seating is arranged in airline-style unidirectional seats that come in pairs, arranged across a central aisle. The open-plan carriages are airy and offer good legroom. The great majority of seats face in the direction of travel. All seats have footrests. Enjoy the on-board audio facilities at your seat.

Food and drink on Altaria

Café / Buffet

Every Altaria train carries a cafeteria or buffet car open to all passengers that offers hot and cold drinks, beer and wine during your journey. At lunch and dinner time hot meals can be ordered. Don’t expect fine dining; you’ll either take your snack back to your seat or enjoy it while standing at one of the bar tables in the buffet car.

Child and youth passengers

The definition of "Child" and "Youth" varies by country and operator. This is why we ask for the age of young passengers.

Sometimes children below a certain age can travel without a seat for free. If you want to guarantee a seat for child passengers, enter '6' as the age of the child.
