When travelling by train from Milan to Florence, you have a choice of NTV Italo or Trenitalia Frecciarossa services, each offering hourly departures from Milan.
The route follows a high-speed line. The first part of the journey offers beautiful views. Sit on the right of the train for glimpses of approaching hills as you speed from the River Po south-east towards Bologna. After Bologna, the train follows a new line to Florence which opened in late 2009. The view here are a bit disappointing: most of the Bologna to Florence stretch is in tunnels.
Bookings for Trenitalia services on the Milan to Florence route normally open four months prior to travel. Bookings for NTV Italo services may open earlier. You'll find the cheapest tickets when booking opens.
Milan to Florence
The fastest trains from Milan to Florence take just 1 hr 40 mins for this journey of more than 300 kilometres. Trains leave Milan from two different stations. All Italo services and most Trenitalia Frecciarossa services to Florence leave from Milan Centrale. A small number of Trenitalia trains depart from Porta Garibaldi instead. All fast trains arrive in Florence at Santa Maria Novella station.
Most of these high-speed direct trains from Milan to Florence only stop once along the way, at Bologna Centrale. A small number of trains make one or two additional stops, extending the overall journey time by up to 20 minutes.
