  1. The new direct train from Madrid to Avignon has given a boost to travel between the two cities. If the timings of this train do not suit your schedule there are further options which normally require a change of train at both Barcelona Sants and Narbonne, adding in total about an hour to the overall journey time.

    The direct service to Avignon from Madrid is run by Spanish rail operator RENFE, using high-speed AVE trains. The first part of the journey is a fast dash from Madrid through Barcelona to Perpignan in France. Thereafter the pace slows as the train cruises through Languedoc, eventually crossing the River Rhône to reach Avignon.
