Travelling along the Rhine Valley

At a glance

  • Scenic train

The train is the obvious choice for exploring the scenic Rhine Valley in Germany. A variety of trains types – from sleek modern ICEs to modest local services – use the main Rhine Valley routes. Beautiful riverside routes make this the ultimate rail-cruise.

Savvy travellers heading south from Cologne opt for the classic line which hugs the Rhine through its famous gorge section upstream from Koblenz past the Loreley towards Rüdesheim and Bingen. Be aware that there is also a new line which is used by fast trains from Cologne to Frankfurt that by-passes these scenic highlights of the Rhine Valley.

Comfortable ICE and EuroCity services allow for a sedate cruise with large windows for sightseeing and few en-route stops. Opt for slower local trains if you wish to stop off here and there along the way. The most celebrated part of the scenic Rhine Valley route is the 60-km stretch south from Koblenz. It takes 30 mins on the fastest trains or up to an hour on local services.

Seating and sleeping on Rhine Valley Train

Standard Class

Standard Class seating on ICE, EC and IC trains is good for watching the landscape slip by beyond the window, with fine views of the River Rhine. Expect comfortable, reclining seats and plenty of luggage space. On local services, Standard Class is more humble, but perfectly adequate for the short journeys along the Rhine Valley.

Food and drink on Rhine Valley Train

A modest bistro service is available on many IC trains on the Rhine Valley route. Expect soups, salads, other light meals and a range of hot and cold beverages.

Child and youth passengers

The definition of "Child" and "Youth" varies by country and operator. This is why we ask for the age of young passengers.

Sometimes children below a certain age can travel without a seat for free. If you want to guarantee a seat for child passengers, enter '6' as the age of the child.
