Taking the train to the north of Spain
Frequent and fast, the most obvious way to travel from the UK to northern Spain by train is via Paris. The high-speed, double-decker train from Paris to Barcelona takes just 6 hrs 20 mins and can be easily combined with a Eurostar from the UK.
When travelling from London to Barcelona by train, most people opt to leave London just after nine in the morning, reaching Barcelona in the evening with a journey time of a touch over 10 hours. Not bad for a trip of 1570 km (that's just a shade under 1000 miles)! You'll also save around 89 kg of CO2 compared to flying.
During the peak summer season, there will be a later departure also routing via Paris and reaching Barcelona late evening.
Girona and Figueres are excellent summer locations, go from Paris to Figueres to visit the leafy, laid-back Spanish city made famous by the museum dedicated to the life and work of Salvador Dali.
In Girona, you'll find one of Europe's most famous walled cities that was used as one of the locations to film Game of Thrones!
The direct services depart twice a day year-round, increasing to three times daily in June and four in July and August. The summer timetable change gives additional options for travellers in the UK, making it possible to make the entire journey in one day from stations outside of London.
The journey south from Perpignan has good views of the Pyrenees. And keep your eyes peeled between Narbonne and Perpignan for the lakes (L'étang de l'Ayrolle) at the Narbonne Natural Park.
Upon arrival in Spain, you'll find a world of things to do and see. Barcelona, in particular, is packed with top class tourist attractions making it one of the most prominent destinations for a city break in the world.
