Trains to Salzburg Find train times and tickets

The city of Salzburg often tops the ‘must see’ list for visitors to Austria. Lovers of music and mountains, devotees of snow and schnitzel flock to Salzburg to explore a city that enjoys a superb setting just a stone’s throw from the border with Bavaria.

Salzburg is a natural hub for rail traffic, and thus offers excellent connections to the rest of Austria and further afield. Austrian Railways use their premium Railjet trains on daytime services to Zurich, Vienna and Budapest. There are direct EuroCity trains to the German cities of Stuttgart, Heidelberg, Frankfurt and Cologne. Frequent trains run from Salzburg to Munich and Innsbruck, both less than two hours away. For night owls, there are direct services each night from Salzburg to Zagreb, Ljubljana and Venice.

It is perfectly possible to reach Salzburg in a day from London, but it is a long day and you’ll need to make two or three changes of train along the way. Reckon on about 12 hours. Paris is about nine hours distant, usually with just one change of train (at either Stuttgart, Munich or Zurich).
