It is easy to travel by train from Milan to Paris. There is an overnight option, using the Thello night train from Milan to Paris. Yet many travellers prefer doing the journey entirely by day, using the direct TGV service which links the two cities three times each day.
The route used by the daytime TGV services runs west from Lombardy, crossing Piedmont to reach the Alps. Entering France through the Fréjus rail tunnel, the train follows a scenic route east towards Burgundy. The journey ends with an impressive high-speed dash to Paris.
Bookings for this journey normally open four months in advance. It is a key business route and booking at the last minute likely means higher fares. So book well in advance for the cheapest tickets.
Milan to Paris
The daytime high-speed trains to Paris leave from Milan Porta Garibaldi and arrive at Paris Lyon station. All trains from Milan to Paris stop at Turin, Oulx and Bardonecchia before diving under the Alps to reach France. Once in France, the route runs via Modane and Chambéry to reach the Burgundy region.
With an overall journey time of about 7 hrs 20 mins, and just six stops along the way, this is a comfortable and interesting journey. It is by no means high speed for the entire route, so sit back and watch the Alps and landscapes of rural France slip by beyond the carriage window.
