Taking the train from Marseille to Milan became much easier with the launch in late 2014 of a new direct EuroCity service linking the two cities. This service is operated by Thello. For much of the year there is a once-daily direct train on the route, though during the winter season (from late November to late March), the direct train runs just twice or thrice weekly. The journey time is 7 hrs 20 mins. If the timings of the direct Thello service don't suit you, there are plenty of alternative options every day of the week. This normally requires a change of train in Nice and sometimes also in Ventimiglia.
The Thello EuroCity train runs east to the Côte d'Azur and traverses the Principality of Monaco. You'll cross the French-Italian border between Menton and Ventimiglia. Until Genoa, the entire journey to Milan broadly follows the Mediterranean coast. For the best of the sea views, sit on the right side side of the train. From Genoa, the train heads inland, running north-east to Milan.
Bookings for this route normally open three to four months in advance of travel. To get the cheapest fares on the direct Thello trains (called 'Smart'), it is worth booking as soon as tickets go on sale.
