Taking the train from Chambéry to Moûtiers is very easy. Chambéry is the natural jumping-off point for excursions to Moûtiers and the other winter sports resorts in the Tarentaise Valley region. SNCF run both TER trains and buses on this regional route which climbs slowly up into the mountains east of Chambéry. Most services are direct, but you will find the occasional itinerary which requires a change of train or bus in Albertville.
Bookings for this route normally open three months in advance, though for summer season bookings Loco2 is sometimes able to sell tickets four months or even longer in advance. However, the fare on TER trains from Chambéry to Moûtiers is fixed, so it matters little whether you book a week or a month in advance.
Chambéry to Moûtiers
SNCF run about seven direct regional trains (called TER services) each day from Chambéry Challes-les-Eaux to Moûtiers-Salins-Brides-les-Bains. This schedule is supplemented by up to six SNCF bus services which follow exactly the same route up the Isère Valley to Moûtiers. Our system clearly shows which services are buses and which are trains.
The fares and journey time are much the same, whether you opt for a train or a bus. Reckon on about 90 minutes for the run from Chambéry to Moûtiers. Leaving Chambéry, the route skirts the Massif de Bauges. The last part of the journey is the most dramatic as the train or bus climbs up steadily towards the Vanoise Mountains.
