Taking the train from Chambéry to Bourg-Saint-Maurice (for Les Arcs) is very easy. Chambéry is the natural jumping-off point for excursions to Bourg-Saint-Maurice and the other winter sports resorts in the Tarentaise Valley region. SNCF run both TER trains and buses on this regional route which climbs slowly up into the mountains east of Chambéry. Most services are direct, but you will find the occasional itinerary which requires a change of train or bus in Albertville or Moûtiers.
Bookings for this route normally open three months in advance, though for summer season bookings Loco2 is sometimes able to sell tickets four months or even longer in advance. However, the fare on TER trains from Chambéry to stations in the Tarentaise Valley is fixed, so it matters little whether you book a week or a month in advance.
