It is just a short hop by direct train from Barcelona to Girona, a town famous for its walled medieval Old Town. Regular AVE trains make the 40-min journey. You can also use TGV trains bound for France (shown in our system as 'AVE-TGV' trains for this journey entirely within Spain). Our booking system also shows Avant services on the route, but these are in fact regular high-speed AVE or TGV trains with a special lower Avant fare on this busy route through Catalonia.
Tickets go on sale about four months in advance. This route is unusual in having different fare rules from most Spanish high-speed services. The route is offered at a fixed fare, which does not vary in the run-up to the departure date. You therefore wont find cheaper tickets by booking in advance. The Spanish rail operator often releases tickets in batches, sometimes 120 days or more in advance. If you're having trouble finding tickets, contact us and we'll email you when booking opens.
Barcelona to Girona
The non-stop trains from Barcelona to Girona all depart from Barcelona Sants station. With a dozen high-speed trains each day on the route, you have plenty of choice. The station where you alight in Girona is very convenient for the city centre. There are no coastal views, as the route heads inland as soon as it leaves Barcelona. But sit on the left side of the train for great views of the Montseny massif.
