Cheapest way to Spain by train

  • I was thinking of travelling to Spain by train and was wondering what the best and chepest way would be to travel there as rail fares are expensive? the fares encourage you to instead travel by plane. I would also like to know if there are any rail passes you can buy to lower the fares too?

    Thanks

  • There should be reasonable fares available 90 days in advance - some on Loco2, others via Renfe. I can give you an idea of the best price you can expect on those routes, depending where you want to go. Or you could consider a railpass if you're planning to make lots of journeys during your trip.

Where in Spain are you planning to go? Have you got an itinerary with multiple stops in mind, or is there one place in particular you want to visit?

  • Hi Kate

Ok I will check the website 90 days in advance to see what's going. I was thinking of going to Madrid and possible stopping off in Paris?

    Thanks

  • Hi Suzy,

Yes you will have to make a change in Paris, so it makes a great place to stop off. The most efficient route is London - Paris - Barcelona - Madrid, and each of those cities is overflowing with things to see and do, so you could break it up and stay in one or all of those places that you need to change.

For 5 days of train travel within 10 days rail passes start at about £234 for an adult pass, and that would make sense if you wanted to stop off on the way. It will most likely be cheaper than buying point-to-point tickets as well, but for some trains you will have to pay an added seat reservation fee.

    Hope that helps!

  • Thank you Anila, that is very helpful, does the rate include returning to London aswell please? I will look at prices nearer the time and see what Loco offers too!

    Kind regards Suzy

  • Eurostar tickets (rather frustratingly) are not fully included in a pass, although some discount is offered. Given that you may only be making one stop it might be cheaper to just purchase point to point tickets. When you have an itinerary, let us know and we can advise on what will be best!
